A kindergarten graduation ceremony at a Catholic school in Toledo, Ohio, descended into chaos this week when a dispute over seating erupted into a violent brawl involving multiple parents and family members. One woman has been charged with felonious assault following the incident.
Incident Details
The altercation occurred Thursday morning at Queen of Apostles School as families gathered for the graduation ceremony, according to local news outlet 13 Action News. Police reported that Jessica Anderson, 28, allegedly grabbed another woman by the hair and slammed her head into a chair, causing injuries that required stitches.
Students were rehearsing downstairs at the time and did not witness the confrontation, said parent Craig Mays. He explained that the dispute began when another family started moving chairs to create their own seating area, blocking the view of his child's mother. Mays attempted to calm the situation but said Anderson continued to use profane language and act aggressively.
"She's just talking, just cussing, talking crazy. Calling us weird and saying we need to mind our business," Mays recounted.
Escalation and Violence
The argument quickly escalated when members of Anderson's family allegedly joined the confrontation and attacked Mays. He described being sucker-punched and then set upon by multiple individuals. "Once I was taken to the ground, it was probably four or five other guys that were on top of me, trampling me, punching me, kicking me in the head," Mays said.
Mays also stated that his child's mother tried to intervene but was grabbed by the hair and assaulted by several women. Video footage reportedly shows Anderson, wearing a light pink shirt, along with others attacking the woman.
Aftermath
School leaders called 911, and the graduation ceremony was cancelled. Mays, a kindergarten teacher himself, expressed deep disappointment. "So, being at another school's kindergarten graduation, I know how hard those kids work. I know how hard those teachers work for us just to ruin it and be selfish like that and it breaks my heart. I couldn't watch my daughter graduate today," he said.
Queen of Apostles School has not yet announced a rescheduled date for the graduation. In a Facebook post, school officials thanked the Toledo Police Department for their rapid response and confirmed that all students were safe. The Independent has contacted the school and police for further comment.
