A Gloucestershire police officer whose wife and two children died in a Boxing Day house fire has paid tribute to 'three of the greatest humans to ever grace our presence'. Tom Shearman, a serving officer, lost his wife Fionnghuala, known as Nu, and their children Eve, seven, and Ohner, four, in the blaze at their cottage in Brimscombe in the early hours of 26 December. The family dog, Hutch, also died.
Shearman, who smashed his way out of the stone cottage and tried to rescue his children from outside but was beaten back by flames, described the anguish and trauma of the event. He said he was 'humbled beyond comprehension' by the response of the community and public, who have donated more than £300,000 to support him.
In a statement, Shearman said: 'I cannot begin to describe the anguish and trauma of the events of Boxing Day 2025. My family had its very core, its very essence, ripped from it in the most violent way.' He thanked the emergency services and urged others to 'hug your loved ones, tell them you love them'.
Shearman also outlined plans to continue his wife's legacy of craft and design, as she ran a bespoke handbag manufacturer, and to honour his children's passions for books and helping others. He concluded: 'Now go light up the darkest corners and the black sky. In memory of Nu. Eve. Ohner. Hutch.'
