A police officer shot in Nottingham city centre has undergone several surgeries and remains in hospital days after the incident, police have said. PC Lee Lane was shot in the foot on Angel Row, one of Nottingham's busiest streets, at 4.50am on Sunday.
Aisha Zaman, 27, appeared at Nottingham Magistrates' Court today charged with two offences. The court heard a firearm discharged as PC Lane approached two people at a bus stop. The gun fell to the floor and discharged after the officer arrived at the scene. A weapon that appeared to be a sawn-off double-barrelled shotgun was pictured at the scene on Sunday.
Charges and court appearance
Zaman, of Collison Street in the Hyson Green area of Nottingham, has been charged with possession of a prohibited firearm, namely an adapted shotgun, and possession of that firearm with intent to commit an indictable offence. She spoke only to confirm her name, date of birth and address when she appeared in court, while her parents and younger sister sat in the public gallery.
Mrs Simpson, the chair of the magistrates bench, remanded Zaman in custody. The case was sent to Nottingham Crown Court, where a plea and trial management hearing will take place, Nottingham Post reports.
Defence statement and further arrests
Defence solicitor Omar Banares told the hearing: "Of course this incident is serious; it has made national news. She does not face any charge in relation to the discharge of the firearm or injuring the officer. She lives at home with her father and mother who are in the public gallery along with her younger sister."
PC Lane remains in hospital in a stable condition. Several other people have been held in connection with the incident, including two men, aged 24 and 30, and two women, aged 25 and 21, all arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. A 35-year-old man and a 33-year-old woman were also arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life and assisting an offender and remain in police custody, the force said on Thursday evening.
