Shanice Brookes, a 30-year-old charity worker and mother, has been remembered as a 'one of a kind' mum after she was fatally shot outside the One Four One bar in Sheffield city centre in the early hours of Bank Holiday Monday. Despite paramedics' best efforts, she died in hospital.
Family Tribute
Her family described her as having 'the biggest heart' and the ability to 'light up every room she walked into with her infectious laugh, beautiful soul and magical aura.' Shanice, who was due to graduate from university, was 'simply an innocent bystander' to an incident outside the bar, according to police.
Police Statement
Detective Chief Inspector Andy Knowles of South Yorkshire Police said: 'People often say innocent victims were in the wrong place at the wrong time, but Shanice was not in the wrong place at the wrong time – we should all be able to go on nights out and know that we will come home safely.' He added that the incident 'lays bare the devastation gun crimes causes within families and communities.'
Arrests Made
Three people have been arrested: a 30-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman from Stockport, and a 30-year-old man from Sheffield. Police continue to work around the clock to identify any other individuals involved.
Broader Context
The shooting follows a similar incident earlier this month in Brixton, south London, where Keanu Taylor, 25, was killed. Police have urged witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.
