Mother Receives Life Sentence for Drowning Her Two Young Sons in Bath
In a harrowing case that has shocked the nation, a mother has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of her two young sons, whom she drowned in the bath at their family home in Dagenham. Kara Alexander, 48, was found guilty of killing two-year-old Elijah and five-year-old Marley Thomas in December 2022, with the court hearing she was under the influence of drugs at the time of the incident.
Discovery of the Tragic Scene
The boys' father, who had been due to collect them for the weekend, grew increasingly concerned when his calls and messages to Alexander went unanswered. He decided to visit the house, where Alexander informed him the children were sleeping upstairs. Upon checking, he discovered his sons lying dead side by side on the lower bunk of their shared bed, dressed in their pyjamas.
The horrified father raced downstairs, screaming, "You've killed my children," before fleeing the property to raise the alarm. By the time he reached the ground floor, Alexander had already escaped through neighbouring gardens into an adjacent street. Emergency services attended the scene but were unable to save Elijah and Marley, who had been dead for several hours.
Investigation and Court Proceedings
Police immediately launched a manhunt for Alexander, tracking her down approximately an hour later. During the trial at Kingston Crown Court, Alexander denied the murder charge, claiming she had fallen asleep while the boys were in the bath and that their deaths were accidental drownings.
However, prosecutors demonstrated that, given the ages of the boys, accidental drowning was impossible. The only plausible explanation was that Alexander had intervened, causing them to drown. A post-mortem examination concluded the boys died as a result of drowning or suffocation.
Sentencing and Judicial Remarks
In April 2025, Mr Justice Bennathan sentenced Alexander to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 21 years and 252 days. Sentencing her, the judge noted that Alexander had been smoking skunk cannabis every night for weeks, probably much longer, and was in a drug-induced state at the time of the murders.
"On the evening of the 15th of December 2022, you'd been smoking skunk," the judge said. "You drowned them both by your deliberate acts. I can draw no other conclusion than that, in her condition at the time, she had intended to kill the boys." He added that she had "unspeakably" held them underwater for "up to a minute or two," but noted the acts were not pre-meditated.
Statements from Authorities
Samantha Yelland of the Crown Prosecution Service expressed sympathy for the family, stating, "Our thoughts remain with Elijah and Marley's family and friends who have been completely devastated by their loss. It is unimaginable to think what those poor children went through in their final moments."
Detective Chief Inspector Paul Waller, who headed the investigation, praised the first responders and emphasised the trauma experienced by all involved. "This has been a difficult investigation for everyone involved," he said. "This guilty verdict cannot turn back the clock but it does provide the children's family with some form of resolution."
The case has highlighted the devastating impact of drug abuse and parental negligence, leaving a community in mourning and a family shattered by an unthinkable loss.
