Mother Receives Life Sentence for Drowning Her Two Sons in Bath

In a harrowing case that has shocked the community, a mother has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of her two young sons, whom she drowned in the bath while under the influence of drugs. The tragic incident occurred in December 2022 at the family home in Dagenham, leaving the boys' father devastated after discovering their bodies.

Details of the Tragic Event

Kara Alexander, aged 48, was found guilty of murdering her sons, two-year-old Elijah and five-year-old Marley Thomas. According to court proceedings, Alexander had been smoking skunk cannabis regularly in the weeks leading up to the incident. On the evening of December 15, 2022, she placed the boys in the bath as part of their bedtime routine, but instead of caring for them, she deliberately held them underwater for up to two minutes, causing their deaths by drowning or suffocation.

After the act, Alexander dressed the boys in their pyjamas and placed them side by side on the lower bunk of their shared bed, where they were later found by their father. A post-mortem examination confirmed the cause of death as drowning, with evidence ruling out any possibility of accidental drowning given the children's ages.

Father's Heartbreaking Discovery

The boys' father had been scheduled to collect them for the weekend but grew increasingly concerned when his calls and messages to Alexander went unanswered. He decided to visit the home, where Alexander told him the boys were sleeping upstairs. Upon checking, he discovered his sons lying dead, dressed in their pyjamas, and immediately confronted Alexander, screaming, "You've killed my children."

In a state of shock, the father fled the house to alert emergency services, but by the time he returned, Alexander had already escaped through neighbouring gardens. Paramedics and police arrived swiftly but were unable to revive Elijah and Marley, who had been dead for several hours. A manhunt ensued, leading to Alexander's arrest approximately an hour later.

Court Proceedings and Sentencing

During the trial at Kingston Crown Court, Alexander denied the murder charges, claiming she had fallen asleep while the boys were in the bath and that their deaths were accidental. However, prosecutors presented compelling evidence that accidental drowning was implausible, given the boys' ages and the circumstances. They argued that Alexander's deliberate actions caused the deaths, supported by forensic findings and witness testimonies.

In April 2025, Mr Justice Bennathan sentenced Alexander to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 21 years and 252 days. In his sentencing remarks, the judge stated that Alexander had intended to kill the boys in her drug-induced state, describing her acts as "unspeakable." He noted that while the crime was not pre-meditated, it was a result of her prolonged drug use and failure to protect her children.

Statements from Authorities

Samantha Yelland of the Crown Prosecution Service expressed sympathy for the family, saying, "Our thoughts remain with Elijah and Marley's family and friends who have been completely devastated by their loss. It is unimaginable to think what those poor children went through in their final moments. Kara Alexander not only failed to keep them safe but robbed them of their lives."

Detective Chief Inspector Paul Waller, who led the investigation, added, "This has been a difficult investigation for everyone involved. Our thoughts are with the family, especially the boys' father, who found them dead. No parent should have to endure such a horrific experience. While this verdict cannot turn back the clock, it provides some form of resolution for the children's family."

The case highlights the devastating impact of drug abuse on families and the importance of child protection. Authorities have praised the emergency responders who handled the traumatic scene, emphasising the need for continued vigilance in safeguarding vulnerable children.
