A horrific suspected arson attack in Melbourne's western suburbs has claimed the life of a young mother, leaving the community reeling and authorities scrambling for answers.
A Night of Horror in Truganina
Emergency services rushed to the scene of a ferocious house fire on Hogans Road in Truganina in the early hours of Wednesday morning. Despite firefighters' desperate efforts, 31-year-old Katie Tangey tragically lost her life in the blaze.
"This is an absolutely devastating outcome," said Detective Senior Sergeant Stephen Hill. "We believe this fire was deliberately lit, and we're treating it as a homicide investigation."
A Life Cut Short
Katie Tangey, remembered by friends as a "vibrant and loving" young woman, leaves behind grieving family members including her young child. Neighbours reported hearing screams before the home became engulfed in flames around 2:30am.
"She was such a beautiful soul," one distraught neighbour told reporters. "This shouldn't happen to anyone, let alone someone so young with their whole life ahead of them."
Police Hunt for Answers
Homicide detectives have identified a person of interest in the case - 27-year-old Kaz Hamad, who police urgently want to speak with about the incident. Authorities warn the public not to approach Hamad but to immediately contact triple-zero if spotted.
Forensic teams continue to comb through the charred remains of the property for evidence, while arson chemists work to determine the exact cause of the fire.
Community in Mourning
The tight-knit Truganina community has been left shaken by the tragedy, with locals leaving floral tributes near the scene. A GoFundMe page has been established to support Katie's family with funeral expenses.
"This sort of violence has no place in our community," said local councillor Sandra Wilson. "We stand united in grief and in demanding justice for Katie."
