A mother from Berkshire has pleaded guilty to killing her four-year-old son after police discovered the child dead at their family home.
Guilty plea to manslaughter
Akanksha Adivarekar, aged 37, admitted the manslaughter of her young son, Agustya Hegishte, by reason of diminished responsibility. The prosecution accepted her plea, which was entered at court.
Thames Valley Police officers were called to the address in Maidenhead at approximately 6.30pm on 10 June. Despite the efforts of emergency services, the little boy was pronounced dead at the scene.
Arrest and court proceedings
Adivarekar was arrested on suspicion of murder on the same day the tragedy unfolded. She was subsequently formally charged with the offence on 18 June.
The case took a significant turn when the Crown Prosecution Service accepted a plea to the lesser charge of manslaughter. This decision was based on evidence supporting the claim of diminished responsibility at the time of the incident.
A devastating loss for the family
Senior investigating officer Detective Inspector Rob Underhill, of the Major Crime Unit, expressed the profound impact of the case. "First and foremost, our thoughts remain with Agustya's family following what has been a truly devastating loss," he stated.
He added: "We hope this outcome provides the family with some sense of closure and the space and privacy they need to grieve."
Akanksha Adivarekar is now awaiting her fate and is due to be sentenced at the same court on 11 December.
