Met Police officer charged with espionage offences

A serving Metropolitan Police constable has been charged with espionage offences following an alleged encounter with an Israeli embassy official in an upscale London neighbourhood, sparking significant national security concerns.

PC David G******, 25, who was attached to the Met's Parliamentary and Diplomatic Protection Command, appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Tuesday facing serious allegations under the Official Secrets Act.

The Alleged Security Breach

The court heard how the officer allegedly met with an official from the Israeli embassy in Kensington on three separate occasions between October 2023 and February 2024. During these meetings, he is accused of gathering information that could be "useful to an enemy".

Prosecutor Thomas Wilkins revealed disturbing details, stating the officer "abused his position of trust within the Metropolitan Police" and allegedly attempted to obtain classified material that could potentially benefit a foreign power.

Police Response and Security Implications

Commander Dominic Murphy, who leads the Met's Counter Terrorism Command, emphasised the seriousness of the situation: "These are exceptionally grave allegations that strike at the heart of national security and public trust in policing."

The Metropolitan Police has moved swiftly to address potential fallout, with the officer being immediately suspended from duty following his arrest. The force confirmed that thorough reviews of security protocols are underway to prevent similar breaches.

Legal Proceedings and Ongoing Investigation

During the court hearing, District Judge Tan Ikram remanded PC G****** in custody until his next appearance at the Old Bailey on November 1. The officer spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth, and address during the brief proceeding.

Counter-terrorism detectives continue their investigation into the matter, examining the full extent of the alleged security compromise and whether any classified information was successfully obtained or transmitted.

The case has sent shockwaves through diplomatic and security circles, highlighting ongoing concerns about foreign interference and the vulnerability of sensitive government positions to exploitation.
