The Metropolitan Police has confirmed it received a letter in 2019 about a “number of claims” relating to the Duchess of Sussex’s father, Thomas Markle, and is now “reviewing its handling of the matter”.
The force also said it was considering whether it needs to be referred to the police watchdog over the case.
Police confirm 2019 letter
The Met issued the statement as a major update in the ongoing scrutiny of how the force dealt with allegations concerning Mr Markle.
No further details of the claims have been released at this stage.
Review of handling under way
The Met’s confirmation that it is reviewing its own handling of the matter suggests potential procedural concerns are being examined internally.
The question of a referral to the police watchdog remains under consideration as part of that review.
