Masked men try to snatch child in Weston-super-Mare

Two men wearing balaclavas are suspected of trying to grab a child off a pavement in Weston-super-Mare. Detectives are investigating reports that the child was approached by the masked men in the seaside town.

The alarm was raised on Sunday after an incident near the junction of Selworthy Road and St Ives Road in the Bournville area. A parent walking with their child called police after arriving home at about 8.45pm following the frightening incident.

What happened

According to the parent, two men wearing black clothes with their faces covered jumped out of a Ford Transit van and approached the child. It is understood the men did not touch the child or make any physical contact.

Inspector Paul Chaplin from Avon and Somerset Police said: “This is a concerning incident and we’re working to identify these two men and establish the full circumstances of what happened.”

Police response and appeal

Chaplin added: “Officers attended within minutes of the call being received and have spoken to the boy and his family. We will continue to update them as our investigation progresses.”

The force is appealing for anyone who witnessed anything suspicious in the area or has doorbell footage to get in touch.
