Man stabbed to death outside Sutton Coldfield pub; murder probe

A man has been stabbed to death in the car park of a pub on the outskirts of Birmingham, with a murder investigation now underway.

The incident took place at the Beggars Bush car park on Chester Road in Sutton Coldfield just before 2am on Sunday. West Midlands Police said a man in his 20s was stabbed but, despite the best efforts of emergency services, he died at the scene.

Large number of people at pub

The force explained that a "large number of people" were at the pub, with Birmingham Live reporting that there was a birthday party. A blue police tent was seen in place in the car park on Sunday as the car park remained cordoned off.

The perimeter of the cordon also included the nearby Sainsbury's Superstore, which was closed on Sunday morning.

Police appeal for witnesses

A statement from West Midlands Police reads: "We are reviewing CCTV and speaking to witnesses as we work to establish what happened.

"It's believed a large number of people had been at the venue for an event, and we'd appeal for anyone who was there or who has information about what had happened to come forward."

Detective Chief Inspector Stacey Follows explained the investigation is at an early stage.

She said: "Our thoughts are with the man's family and friends today. We will continue to support them as our investigation progresses, and I'd urge anyone who saw what happened, or who has dashcam or CCTV to get in touch with us as soon as possible."

Pub remains closed

A spokesperson for the pub, which is owned by Greene King, confirmed the pub remained closed yesterday and that the venue was "working closely" with the police. "We are supporting our franchisee and their team, who have been shaken by the incident, and our thoughts are with the family and friends of the victim," they said.

Anyone with information should call 101, quoting log 345.
