A man who was seen carrying petrol and a firearm before barricading himself inside a house in Bedford has been shot dead by police following a tense standoff. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has opened an investigation into the incident, which occurred on Tuesday morning.
Incident Timeline
Bedfordshire Police reported that officers were called to Aylesbury Road shortly after 10:40 pm on Monday following reports of vehicles being damaged. Upon arrival, they found a 41-year-old man barricaded inside a property, making threats. Specialist armed officers and police negotiators attempted to engage with the man over several hours.
Shortly after 6 am on Tuesday, neighbours were evacuated after the man was seen pouring petrol from a window and a smell of gas was detected. The police watchdog stated that the man was seen presenting a firearm from a window, prompting firearms officers to return to the scene.
At approximately 9:30 am, the man was shot inside the property by armed officers who were positioned outside. He was declared dead shortly before 10:30 am. A non-police issue firearm was found inside the property.
IOPC Investigation
IOPC director Emily Barry expressed condolences to the man's family and the local community, stating: 'Our thoughts and sympathies are with the man's family and friends and everyone impacted by this incident, including the local Bedford community. We have met with the man's family to explain our role and they will be kept updated as our investigation progresses.'
Barry emphasised the importance of independent investigations in fatal police shootings, which are rare but require full scrutiny for public confidence. The IOPC is in the early stages of its inquiry, working quickly to gather evidence and review the actions and decision-making of the officers involved.
Evidence Collection
The IOPC confirmed that one shot was fired from a police rifle, and two baton rounds were discharged, with one having been used earlier in the incident. Investigators are obtaining and reviewing police footage, including body-worn video, drone footage, and vehicle footage. The identity of the 41-year-old man has not yet been formally confirmed.
