Mother Jailed for Life for Murder of Newborn Daughter

A mother has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the brutal murder of her 19-day-old daughter, Thea Wilson. Nicole Blain, 32, was ordered to serve a minimum of 19 years at the High Court in Glasgow after being found guilty of killing the infant on 14 July 2023 in Greenock, Inverclyde.

Violent and Brutal Attack

Lord Scott, the presiding judge, described the murder as "violent and brutal" and dismissed Blain's claims that another child had caused the fatal injuries. The court heard that Blain repeatedly shook her daughter and inflicted blunt force trauma, leading to the baby's death. Police were called to a property in Greenock after reports of a baby falling unwell, and Thea was rushed to the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow, where she later died.

Absurd Defence Rejected

During the trial, Blain attempted to blame another child for the injuries, a claim the judge labeled as "absurd." The jury convicted her of murder last month, and the judge imposed a life sentence with a punishment part of 19 years. The case has drawn widespread condemnation, highlighting the vulnerability of infants and the severity of such crimes.

Detective Inspector Suzanne Chow of Police Scotland said, "This was a tragic and senseless death of a young child, and our thoughts remain with those who loved Thea. We welcome the sentence, which reflects the severity of the crime."
