Man Receives Life Sentence for Brutal Murder of Girlfriend
Norbert Maiksner, a 49-year-old man of Polish descent, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his girlfriend, Frances Obiefuleh, aged 45. The horrific crime occurred at their shared residence in Havant, Hampshire, with Maiksner ordered to serve a minimum of 24 years behind bars.
Confession on the Motorway
The case took a dramatic turn when Maiksner was discovered by a Highways Officer walking along the hard shoulder of the M40 motorway near High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, on the morning of April 17, 2025. Upon being approached, Maiksner immediately instructed the officer to contact the police, confessing that he had killed his girlfriend.
During the trial at Portsmouth Crown Court, prosecutor Paul Cavin KC detailed how Maiksner described the incident as "all a dream" and expressed a desire to wake up. The court proceeded in Maiksner's absence, as he did not attend the proceedings.
Violent Struggle and Cause of Death
A post-mortem examination revealed that Ms Obiefuleh died from smothering, with additional injuries resulting from compression of her neck and chest. Prosecutors presented evidence that Maiksner had wrapped tape around her face during the attack.
Mr Cavin further noted that Maiksner sustained scratches to his chest and back, which were likely inflicted by Ms Obiefuleh using her fingers and fingernails. "The likely and frankly terrible conclusion is that they were inflicted by Frances with her fingers and fingernails during the attack by the defendant in her last moments as she struggled to stay alive," he stated.
Family Tributes and Police Statements
In a heartfelt statement released through the police, Ms Obiefuleh's family described her as "kind, intelligent, and resourceful - a caring and deeply loving mother, sister, aunt, and friend to many." They added, "She was a devoted mother and beautiful in every sense of the word. Someone we love has been cruelly taken from us, and it has changed our lives forever."
Detective Sergeant Heather Kenwright of Hampshire Constabulary commented on the sentencing, saying, "I am glad to see Maiksner face a life behind bars for committing the most heinous and evil of acts, it is what he deserves for taking the life of an innocent woman." She emphasized the profound impact on the victim's family, stating, "He has caused such unthinkable suffering to both Frances in the last moments of her life, and to her family, who have had their loved one taken from them so brutally and must now try to rebuild their lives without her."
DS Kenwright concluded, "My thoughts remain with Frances's family, and whilst no sentence can ever truly bring them justice for the tragic loss of Frances's life, I hope it brings them some semblance of closure to know that Maiksner is now facing the consequences of his abhorrent actions."
In addition to the murder charge, Maiksner was also charged with child neglect, further compounding the gravity of his offences. The case highlights ongoing concerns about domestic violence and the devastating consequences it can have on families and communities.
