A man has been arrested following a security incident that prompted a bomb disposal response near a busy shopping centre in Dublin. Emergency services, including An Garda Siochana and Dublin Fire Brigade, were swiftly alerted to the scene close to the Liffey Valley shopping centre bus terminal on Wednesday evening.
Arrest and Initial Response
A man aged in his 30s was apprehended under public order legislation and is currently detained at a Dublin garda station. The incident unfolded when authorities received reports of a suspect device in the Liffey Valley area of County Dublin, leading to immediate action from multiple agencies.
Bomb Disposal Operation
The Defence Forces confirmed that their explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) team responded to a request for assistance from An Garda Siochana at approximately 8.20pm. After a thorough assessment, the bomb experts determined the device was non-viable, meaning it posed no active threat. The scene was subsequently handed back to gardai, and the operation concluded by 10pm.
A spokeswoman for An Garda Siochana elaborated that they had initially responded to an incident at a retail park in the Clondalkin area around 7.20pm. She stated, "A cordon was put in place around the area and the services of the Defence Forces Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team was requested. The EOD team attended the scene. The device was deemed non-viable and the cordon was subsequently lifted." She added that investigations into the matter are ongoing.
Traffic and Emergency Measures
Earlier in the evening, Dublin Fire Brigade reported that traffic restrictions were implemented around Liffey Valley, particularly near the bus terminal, as firefighter-paramedics from Tallaght and Blanchardstown ambulance services responded to the incident. This coordinated effort ensured public safety while allowing emergency personnel to manage the situation effectively.
The swift resolution of the bomb scare highlights the preparedness of Irish emergency services in handling potential threats. Authorities continue to probe the circumstances surrounding the suspect device and the arrest, with no further details released at this time.
