A man and his dog have died following a house fire in Wallasey. Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) received a 999 call at 8.38pm on Monday, October 19, and crews arrived at the scene four minutes later.
Fire crews rescue man and dog from Beaufort Drive
When firefighters arrived at Beaufort Drive, they found a semi-detached house with the ground floor well alight and smoke coming from the upper floor. Six firefighters wearing breathing masks entered the property to search and fight the fire. Merseyside Police and North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) also attended.
The occupant, a man, and his dog were rescued from the house, and the fire was extinguished at 9.06pm. Emergency first aid was provided to the man, but he was pronounced dead by paramedics before they arrived at Arrowe Park Hospital.
Dog dies despite resuscitation efforts
Fire crews provided resuscitation to the dog, who also died at the scene. MFRS and Merseyside Police are now undertaking a joint investigation to establish the cause of the fire.
When the ECHO visited the scene this morning, the house was taped off, with one police car parked outside.
Official statement and community reassurance
MFRS Area Manager Ged Knock said: “This is a tragic incident, and our thoughts are with the family and friends of the occupier at this difficult time.
“A joint Merseyside Police and Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service investigation is underway to establish the cause of the fire.
“As an attendee at scene, I can confirm that fire crews worked hard in extremely difficult circumstances to perform both rescues and all three blue light agencies contributed with their all to preserve life.
“We are conscious of the impact on the community and will conduct a full reassurance programme for the area.”
