Shocking Bodycam Footage Reveals Machete Attack on Police Officer in Gateshead

Disturbing video evidence has emerged showing the terrifying moment a man launched a vicious machete attack on a police officer at a Gateshead petrol station. The footage, released by Northumbria Police, captures the violent assault that left Roads Policing Constable Will Hunter injured during what began as a routine vehicle stop.

Violent Confrontation at Leam Lane Petrol Station

The incident unfolded on August 10, 2024, when PC Hunter stopped Matthew Bello's vehicle at a petrol station on Leam Lane in Gateshead. The initial stop was conducted due to concerns about the vehicle's insurance status, but the situation rapidly escalated into a life-threatening confrontation.

Bodycam footage shows Bello, 52, of no fixed abode, suddenly producing a machete and attacking PC Hunter without warning. The officer sustained a significant injury to his arm during the assault before Bello fled the scene in his vehicle, deliberately ramming the police car and leaving the injured officer in the road.

Swift Police Response and Arrest

Despite his injuries, PC Hunter managed to radio for immediate backup. Police colleagues responded rapidly, locating and arresting Bello in the nearby Saltwell area shortly after the attack. The quick response prevented further violence and ensured the suspect was taken into custody.

Bello was originally charged with attempted murder but later pleaded guilty to the lesser offence of wounding with intent at Newcastle Crown Court. He was remanded in custody ahead of his sentencing hearing.

Court Sentencing and Driving Ban

At Newcastle Crown Court, Matthew Bello received a four-year prison sentence for multiple offences including wounding with intent, possession of a knife in a public place, dangerous driving, and driving without insurance. The court also imposed a two-year driving ban that will commence upon his release from prison.

The sentencing reflects the seriousness of the attack and sends a clear message about the consequences of violence against police officers performing their duties.

Officer's Recovery and Recognition

PC Will Hunter, who has served with Northumbria Police for eighteen years, returned to duty following the attack. His courageous actions during the incident were formally recognised when he received the Bravery and Lifesaver Award at the Northumbria Police Pride in Policing Awards.

Reflecting on the traumatic experience, PC Hunter stated: "In my 18 years' service, I've had to deal with violent situations, but never have I been faced with someone coming at me like what happened on that day. All of my training kicked in, and I did everything I could to stop him from hitting me - I was fighting for my life."

He continued: "Thankfully, officers nearby came to my assistance, and everyone pulled together to detain the offender. While we are trained to deal with violent situations, we don't come into work expecting to be attacked. I could have easily been more seriously injured. I could have died on that day."

Police Leadership Praise Officer's Bravery

Assistant Chief Constable Steve Wykes commended PC Hunter's conduct during the terrifying incident, stating: "PC Hunter showed incredible bravery and should be extremely proud of his actions that day, and it is a privilege to call him a colleague. This was a shocking attack and one which could have easily had a far worse outcome."

He added: "Our officers come to work every single day to make a difference to people's lives, and we want to make it clear that violence against them is completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated. I am pleased the person responsible for this attack has been brought to justice."

The released bodycam footage serves as a stark reminder of the dangers police officers face while performing routine duties and has prompted discussions about officer safety and public support for law enforcement personnel.
