Jagger Leads Celebrities to Block London Skyscraper

Mick Jagger has successfully opposed plans for a 29-storey high-rise development near Battersea Bridge in London, following a two-year battle. The Rolling Stones musician was supported by other celebrities, including Felicity Kendal, Eric Clapton, and Harry Hill, in his fight against the 100-metre building. Proposals for 110 luxury flats were initially rejected by Wandsworth Council and the Greater London Authority in 2025.

Planning Inspector Dismisses Appeal

A planning inspector has now dismissed an appeal by developers Rockwell Property, ruling that the project would be detrimental to the local area's appearance and heritage. The inspector stated that the building would cause a “dramatic change to the skyline” and appear “alien and isolated”. Rockwell Property expressed disappointment over the decision.

Celebrity Campaign

The high-profile opposition included not only music legend Mick Jagger but also comedian Harry Hill and guitar virtuoso Eric Clapton. Together, they argued that the tower would overshadow the historic Battersea Bridge and disrupt the character of the neighbourhood. Their campaign highlighted the importance of preserving London's unique urban landscape against unsympathetic modern developments.

The developer's appeal was based on claims that the project would bring economic benefits and much-needed housing. However, the inspector concluded that the negative visual impact outweighed any advantages. The decision marks a significant victory for local residents and heritage groups who have long fought to protect the skyline along the River Thames.
