A Houston father has been charged with capital murder following the tragic discovery of his eight-day-old son's body in a drainage ditch, in a case that has shocked the local community.
Demari Alston, 22, now faces the most serious criminal charges after authorities say his newborn baby, Demari Alston Jr., was found deceased in a water-filled ditch in northwest Houston last week.
Disturbing Discovery
According to court documents obtained by The Independent, the grim discovery was made on 18th June when police responded to reports of a deceased infant in the 13700 block of Mellow Creek Lane.
Officers arrived to find the tiny body of baby Demari submerged in water within the drainage channel, prompting an immediate investigation into what authorities are calling a heartbreaking case of child endangerment.
Father's Changing Story
Court records reveal that Alston initially told investigators he had placed the infant on a sofa to sleep while he went to use the bathroom. When he returned, he claimed the baby was missing.
However, prosecutors say surveillance footage from the family's apartment complex tells a different story. The video allegedly shows Alston leaving his residence carrying a large bag, which investigators believe contained his son's body.
Medical Evidence Points to Foul Play
An autopsy conducted by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences revealed the infant had suffered multiple broken ribs and a skull fracture. Medical examiners determined these injuries were inconsistent with accidental causes.
The Harris County District Attorney's Office stated the nature and timing of these injuries strongly suggest intentional harm rather than any form of accident.
Community Reaction and Legal Proceedings
Neighbours expressed shock and devastation upon learning the details of the case. Many described the area as typically quiet and family-friendly.
Alston remains in custody at Harris County Jail, with bond set at $1 million. If convicted of capital murder, he could face life imprisonment without parole or potentially the death penalty under Texas law.
The investigation continues as authorities work to build their case against the 22-year-old father, whose preliminary court appearance is scheduled for later this month.
