Canadian School Shooting Leaves 12-Year-Old Girl Fighting for Life
A 12-year-old girl is fighting for life in hospital after she was shot in the head and neck during a devastating school shooting in Canada. Maya Edmonds was among at least two dozen children and teachers wounded when a female assailant, described as wearing a dress, opened fire at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School on Tuesday.
Deadliest Mass Shooting in Four Decades
At least seven people were killed in the shooting at the small town in eastern British Columbia, marking Canada's deadliest mass shooting in 40 years. Two more victims were found dead at a nearby home, believed to be connected to the massacre. The shooter also died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the school.
Maya's mother, Cia Edmonds, is by her critically wounded daughter's bedside after she was airlifted to Vancouver Children's Hospital. In a heartfelt statement, she described the harrowing turn of events.
Mother's Heartbreaking Plea for Prayers
'Today started as any other. Now, however, my 12-year-old daughter is fighting for her life while they try to repair the damage from a gunshot wound to the head, and one to the neck,' Cia Edmonds said. She added, 'She was a lucky one, I suppose. Condolences to the other families during this tragedy. This doesn't even feel real.'
In an emotional appeal, she continued, 'I never thought I would be asking for prayers... but please, please, pray for my baby.'
Community Support Through GoFundMe Campaign
Edmonds' cousin, Krysta Hunt, started a GoFundMe campaign to allow Maya's mother to take time off work and support her through recovery. Hunt noted that while there is no clear recovery timeline, Maya has cleared the first hurdle by surviving transport to Vancouver.
The shooting has sent shockwaves through the community and across Canada, with authorities continuing their investigation into the motive and circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
