French school shooting: Principal and teacher wounded by pupil

A school principal and teacher were shot after a 14-year-old pupil allegedly stormed a French school carrying a shotgun. The teenager is accused of entering Joseph-Lakanal college in Aubagne armed with a 12-gauge weapon before opening fire, leaving the head teacher and a member of staff injured.

Both victims were shot in the lower body and treated by emergency crews, with their injuries understood not to be life-threatening, the Daily Star reports. The shocking incident triggered a major emergency response.

Authorities rule out link to protests

Authorities stressed there was, at this stage, "no connection to the high school protests, as this school is not affected by the blockades". Meanwhile, the Bouches-du-Rhône fire brigade said it had "responded to an incident at the Joseph-Lakanal middle school in Aubagne," without releasing additional information.

Suspect in custody

The 14-year-old boy taken into custody on Monday was carrying a gun, police said. The staff members were hit with ammunition used in 12-gauge shotguns, officers added. The shooting occurred outside a middle school that was not affected by the protests on Monday, police said.
