Florida Deputy Fatally Shoots Armed Teen During Walmart Shoplifting Confrontation

A heartbroken mother has expressed immense pride in her 16-year-old son, who was shot and killed by a Florida deputy while allegedly armed and involved in a shoplifting incident. Jairus Jones, affectionately known as JJ, was gunned down by an off-duty Osceola County sheriff's deputy working security at a Walmart on Thursday evening.

Mother's Tribute to a 'Bright Beautiful Light'

Naporsha Jones Spruill, speaking to local news outlet WESH, described her son as a vibrant and loving young man. 'My son Jairus, who everyone knew and loved as JJ, was a bright beautiful light in this world,' she stated. 'As his mother, I am beyond proud of the young man he was becoming. He was full of life, full of love, and full of dreams. Our hearts are shattered, but we want the world to remember JJ for his smile, his energy, and the love he gave so freely.'

Details of the Shoplifting Incident and Shooting

According to Sheriff Chris Blackman, the off-duty deputy was alerted that three individuals were attempting to steal from the Walmart store. Upon confronting the suspects, the officer observed that one of them, later identified as Jairus Jones, was armed with a handgun. The Osceola County Sheriff's Office reported that Jones allegedly attempted to flee from the deputy and rushed toward other customers, which prompted the officer to open fire.

Investigators indicated that the deputy feared for the safety of other shoppers, leading to the decision to shoot. Sheriff Blackman confirmed that surveillance video had been obtained but did not disclose whether the suspect aimed his weapon at the deputy.

Witness Accounts and 'Good Samaritan' Involvement

Three armed individuals, described as 'good Samaritans,' were present at the scene and offered assistance. One of them, corrections officer Yamil Villanueva, spoke to Channel 9 about the ordeal. Villanueva recounted that the off-duty deputy repeatedly commanded Jones to stop, but he did not comply. 'Then he tried to pull out his gun and run,' Villanueva said. 'The gun fell. The [deputy] directed him not to pick up the gun, and leave the gun on the floor. He didn’t comply.'

Villanueva heard gunshots and, fearing for public safety, drew his own concealed firearm but did not discharge it. Instead, he alerted the deputy and identified himself. During this interaction, customers and employees were evacuating the store. 'I was relieved, but I didn’t know what was going on until [I] drew my firearm and peeped the corner,' he recalled. 'I realized the suspect had got shot.'

Aftermath and Ongoing Investigation

The other two shoplifting suspects—a juvenile and a man in his 20s—have been identified but not publicly named, according to Channel 9. They were not arrested or charged following the incident. The deputy involved in the shooting has been placed on paid administrative leave, adhering to standard protocol, while the shooting remains under investigation.

Law enforcement training officer Steve Kelly explained the deputy's rationale to FOX35, emphasizing public safety. 'Wherever we go, we're there to ensure the safety of the public. That's our number one goal—they have to feel safe and be safe,' Kelly stated. 'If there's a guy running with a gun, we have to take action... to save their lives.'

Jones' mother continues to seek answers about the circumstances surrounding her son's death. The Daily Mail has contacted the Osceola County Sheriff's Office for further comment as the community grapples with this tragic event.
