Internal Investigation Launched
The Metropolitan Police confirmed the arrests, stating the force's Directorate of Professional Standards has been notified and has launched an internal investigation. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has also been made aware of the serious allegations.
A Met Police spokesperson said: "We can confirm that five officers were arrested on suspicion of sexual assault. They have been suspended from duty. The Directorate of Professional Standards has been informed."
Culture of Misconduct Under Scrutiny
This scandal emerges amidst intense scrutiny of the Metropolitan Police's culture and standards. The force has been repeatedly rocked by allegations of misconduct, misogyny, and criminal behaviour within its ranks, severely damaging public trust.
The case has drawn immediate condemnation from police representatives and advocacy groups, who cite it as another example of the profound cultural issues facing the service.
