Five Arrested, Nine Wanted After Graduation Brawl in Tennessee

Five people have been arrested and authorities are searching for nine more individuals following a violent brawl among adults at a high school graduation ceremony in rural Tennessee, prompting a county-wide curfew.

Incident at Ripley High School Graduation

The Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office reported that the disturbance occurred on May 15 at Ripley High School’s graduation ceremony. Four adults and one juvenile are now in custody. Those arrested include Za’Darius Smith, Jordan Bonds, and Devontae Robertson, each charged with inciting a riot and disorderly conduct. Stephanie Scott faces a charge of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. A juvenile, identified only as K.M., is charged with inciting a riot, disorderly conduct, and criminal trespassing. Investigators have not disclosed what sparked the violence.

Sheriff’s Statement and Warnings

Sheriff Brian Kelley announced the arrests on Monday, stating, “We have identified several of the individuals involved in the disorder that disrupted Ripley High School’s graduation ceremony. Warrants and juvenile petitions have been signed, and the arrest process is now underway. At this time, five individuals are in custody, and nine remain outstanding.” He added, “To those who have already been identified, your day of accountability has arrived. To those who believe you have escaped detection, understand this: you are only delaying the inevitable. I have the rest of my career to locate every single person responsible, and I assure you that we will not stop until each of you is held fully accountable for your actions.” Kelley also warned parents and guardians to cooperate, saying, “You are responsible for the conduct of your children, and if your child was involved in this disgraceful incident, I fully expect you to bring them forward and cooperate with this investigation. You can run for now, but sooner or later, we will be knocking on your door.”

Investigation and Curfew

The sheriff’s office is reviewing security camera footage and other evidence to identify all participants. In response to the violence and ongoing concerns, Lauderdale County officials imposed a county-wide curfew. Mayor Maurice Gaines stated, “Tonight’s high school graduation should have been a time of celebration and pride for our students, families, and community. Unfortunately, due to a major disturbance and ongoing concerns surrounding recent events, additional precautions are being taken to help maintain public safety across Lauderdale County. Let’s come together as a community, support one another, and work toward ensuring our schools and public events remain safe places for everyone.”

School District Response

The Lauderdale County School District expressed pride in the graduating class and emphasized that the incident does not define the community. “Lauderdale County Schools is incredibly proud of the Ripley High School Class of 2026 and all they have accomplished,” the district said, adding that the events from Friday night “do not define our students, our schools, or our community, and they will not overshadow this important milestone or the hard work our graduates put in to reach it.”
