Fan Throws Ball at MLB Outfielder, Injuring Him

During a Baltimore Orioles versus Toronto Blue Jays baseball game, a bizarre incident unfolded in the bottom of the sixth inning. Toronto outfielder Jesus Sanchez was struck by a baseball thrown from the stands, leading to his premature exit from the contest.

Incident Details

With the Orioles leading 6-0 and two runners on base, Sanchez made a motion toward the crowd—whether a wave or another signal remains unclear. This prompted a fan to hurl a baseball from the stands, hitting Sanchez in his right hand and wrist area. Sanchez initially expressed shock before showing signs of discomfort in his hand and wrist.

Medical Update

The Blue Jays later confirmed that Sanchez left the game due to a right wrist contusion. X-rays returned negative for any fracture, providing some relief for the team. The outfielder was diagnosed with a contusion but no broken bones.

Fan Ejected

Orioles security identified the fan responsible and removed them from the ballpark. Baltimore Sun reporter Jacob Meyer reported that a young fan misinterpreted Sanchez's glove-flapping as an invitation to play catch, leading to the throw. Both Sanchez and Blue Jays manager John Schneider described the event as a misunderstanding.

Reactions

Sanchez told reporters after the game, "It was a misunderstanding. I wasn't trying to play catch right there." Schneider added, "He was kinda talking with a, I think it was a 12-year-old kid... kinda going back-and-forth I think in a playful manner. Like almost like 'hey, let's play catch,' and I think that the kid took it literally." The manager noted, "Not ideal, first time I've seen that... Balls shouldn't be coming into the field of play."

Game Outcome

The Blue Jays ultimately lost the game 9-5, splitting the road series with Baltimore. At the time of his departure, Sanchez had one hit in two at-bats. His replacement, Yohendrick Pinango, drove in three runs on two hits in two plate appearances.
