The family of a 27-year-old man who died after being struck by a vehicle on the M56 this weekend have paid tribute, saying he was in the process of turning his life around.
Cody Lowndes died at the scene on Saturday evening (October 17) after a police pursuit that began on the M60. Before the crash, he was spotted driving a motorbike 'in a dangerous manner' near Stockport Pyramid.
What happened during the pursuit
Police began a pursuit that continued onto the M56. Greater Manchester Police said 'tactical contact' was made with the biker near junction five at Hale Barns. The chase continued and the motorbike was 'brought to a stop' near Wythenshawe, the force said.
GMP said the driver of the motorbike then 'made off on foot across the motorway'. He was then involved in a collision with another vehicle and died on the scene.
Arrest and road closure
Another man involved in the crash - who was not involved in the original chase - was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving when under the influence of drink or drugs. He was also arrested on suspicion of causing death by driving uninsured.
The motorway was shut off for about 12 hours and reopened on Sunday morning.
Family tribute
In a statement issued through Greater Manchester Police, Cody's family said he had finally found a purpose in his life through his baby.
The family said: “Cody was turning his life around. The knowledge that his beautiful daughter will never know the real Cody that we all knew and loved is a hurt that we will struggle to heal, along with the knowledge that we will never get to see Cody live his life to his full potential. The potential we knew he always had.
“We will always love Cody, and he will live on in our hearts and memories. Please let us mourn Cody in peace, as a family.
“As a family we are heartbroken that our best friend Cody has passed away. Cody struggled throughout his life as people may have known, despite the love and care of his family.
“Cody finally found a purpose in his life through his beautiful baby.”
