Exploding Oven Doors: 400+ Incidents, 40+ Injuries

More than 400 incidents of glass doors exploding on electric and gas ovens have been reported in the United States, leading to dozens of injuries, according to a consumer rights organization. Consumer Reports issued a safety alert after analyzing data from the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) covering the period from January 2025 to March 2026.

Injuries and Affected Brands

At least 40 people were hurt in these incidents, which involved ovens from multiple manufacturers. The problem appears to be most prevalent in models that are four to six years old, often well past their warranty periods. Consumer Reports investigator Gabe Knight stated that one owner described the sound as 'like a small bomb going off.'

The majority of reports—nearly 70 percent—involved Frigidaire appliances. However, Consumer Reports also found incidents involving GE, Whirlpool, LG, Samsung, and several other brands. The exact cause of the spontaneous shattering has not yet been determined.

Manufacturer Responses

Electrolux, Frigidaire's parent company, suggested that imperfections or damage to the tempered glass used in oven doors could be responsible. The company emphasized that its safety standards require glass to break into small, rounded fragments to minimize injury risk. Other named manufacturers stated that their products meet safety standards.

Currently, only Samsung offers free repairs for the issue, even for ovens with expired warranties.

CPSC Statement

The CPSC acknowledged the reports, stating: 'CPSC is aware of reports and takes them seriously. While the Commission cannot comment on any potential investigations, CPSC evaluates incident reports and other available information to determine whether a product presents a substantial product hazard under the Consumer Product Safety Act. The agency will continue to evaluate incident reports and other available information and will take appropriate action as warranted.'

Safety Recommendations

Experts advise consumers to ensure oven racks are pushed in firmly before closing the door and to avoid using the open door as a shelf for heavy pots or plates. Additionally, users should avoid bumping or scratching the glass with heavy crockery to reduce the risk of damage that could lead to shattering.
