Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has proposed a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, warning that Russians are growing tired of the conflict and that failure to reach a peace deal could threaten Putin's personal position.
In an open letter to Putin on Thursday, Zelensky said the majority of Russians had grown weary of Ukrainian missile and drone attacks, inflation, and fuel shortages, and were ready for peace.
Zelensky cautioned that a lack of a peace agreement could endanger Putin's leadership. He stated: "It is a fact of Russian history that you know well: when Russia grows tired, change comes."
The proposal comes after Putin did not rule out signing a peace deal with Zelensky if an agreement could be reached. Zelensky's warning suggests that continued warfare might lead to internal shifts in Russia.
The Ukrainian leader emphasized that without a peace settlement, both nations would continue to suffer. He urged Putin to consider the growing exhaustion among the Russian populace and the potential for political change.
This development marks a significant moment in the ongoing conflict, with Zelensky directly appealing for dialogue while highlighting the risks of prolonging the war.
