Former Police Officer and Bailiff Jeff Blair Murdered in Shildon Attack
A man has been formally charged with the murder of a court bailiff who was violently assaulted while carrying out his professional duties in County Durham. The victim, identified as former police officer Jeff Blair, aged 55, succumbed to serious injuries after being transported to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough.
Details of the Assault and Charges
Durham Constabulary reported that officers were dispatched to Dent Street in Shildon shortly after 1pm on Tuesday, March 10, following emergency calls concerning a man being assaulted. The investigation led to the arrest and subsequent charging of Robert Davies, 49, with murder, possession of an offensive weapon, and affray. Davies has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear at Peterlee Magistrates’ Court on Friday.
Jeff Blair had dedicated 22 years of service to Durham Constabulary before retiring in 2017. He subsequently embarked on a career as a court bailiff, a role that involves visiting properties to address outstanding debts, serve court documents, or deliver legal notices. It is understood that Blair was attending a property with a locksmith at the time of the tragic incident.
Community Shock and Tributes Pour In
Detective Chief Inspector Sharon Alderson, leading the inquiry, described the event as deeply upsetting and a source of significant shock within the local community. She expressed heartfelt condolences to Blair’s family and friends, emphasizing the ongoing police presence at the scene and appealing for any witnesses or individuals with pertinent information to come forward.
In an emotional statement, Blair’s family remembered him as a much-loved son, brother, father, partner, uncle, and cherished friend. They highlighted his unique ability to inject humour and laughter into any situation, a quality they described as irreplaceable. Additionally, Darlington Storm Basketball Club, where Blair was a former player, coach, and committee member, shared a tribute on social media, offering thoughts and prayers to his family during this traumatic period.
A colleague from a court in north-east England, who wished to remain anonymous, fondly recalled Blair as a lovely guy and an absolute gentleman. An HM Courts and Tribunals Service spokesperson also extended condolences, noting that a review will be conducted to assess whether additional measures are necessary to enhance the safety of bailiffs in their line of work.
