Eminem's ex-wife Kimberley Mathers has pleaded no contest to charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated following a February incident in which she crashed her Range Rover into a parked pickup truck while her teenage son and his friends were aboard.
Details of the Incident
The 51-year-old mother of two appeared in court on Monday to enter her plea regarding the crash that occurred on February 16. According to reports, Mathers was driving her white Range Rover when she collided with a parked Dodge Ram, pushing the truck approximately 50 feet from its original location.
In the vehicle with Mathers were her son Parker, 17, and three of his friends. The group was reportedly on their way to go shopping when the accident happened. Mathers also shares a daughter, Hailie Jade, 30, with the rapper Marshall Mathers III, known professionally as Eminem.
Charges and Legal Proceedings
Mathers was charged with two misdemeanors: operating a vehicle while intoxicated and failure to stop or identify after causing property damage. She pleaded no contest to both charges during Monday's hearing.
Bodycam footage from the scene shows Mathers speaking with officers outside her home. She claimed that a driver in a "little blue car" swerved into her lane, leaving her with no choice but to steer into the pickup truck. "I didn't see the pickup truck, but I felt the impact," she told police.
Evidence of Intoxication
When asked if she had consumed alcohol or drugs, Mathers initially said no. However, she later admitted to drinking "an hour, two hours, maybe three hours ago." A search of her vehicle revealed alcohol, and a preliminary breath test was administered. After the test, she was handcuffed and asked police to notify her family.
The incident did not end with the initial crash. After hitting the parked truck, Mathers drove home and crashed into her closed garage door, causing additional damage to her vehicle. A photo obtained by TMZ shows the Range Rover with a smashed headlight and damaged bumper.
Background and Family
Mathers has had a tumultuous relationship with Eminem, marrying him twice—first from 1999 to 2001, and again briefly in 2006. The couple has one biological daughter, Hailie, and Eminem adopted Mathers' daughter Stevie Laine Scott, born in 2002 from another relationship, as well as his niece Alaina Marie Scott.
Mathers was taken to a hospital after the crash for unspecified injuries and was discharged early on February 24. Her attorney stated he was not aware of any arrest warrant but said she would turn herself in if one were issued.
Upcoming Sentencing
Mathers is scheduled to appear for a sentencing hearing on June 17. The court will determine the penalties for the two misdemeanor charges.
