Taskforce Launched After Wave of Arson Attacks on Melbourne Bars and Restaurants

Victoria Police have established a specialist taskforce to investigate a series of arson attacks on hospitality venues in inner Melbourne, which began on 14 April. Fifteen incidents, including fires and attempted arson at bars, nightclubs and restaurants in the CBD, South Melbourne, South Yarra and Prahran, are being probed.

Detectives from gang crime, arson and explosives, cybercrime, and economic crime squads are targeting organised crime syndicates believed to be linked to the attacks. Police also suspect two kidnappings, a vehicle theft, a drive-by shooting and a factory fire at an alcohol distribution centre are connected.

Detective Superintendent Jason Kelly said Operation Eclipse would target those commissioning and directing the crimes, who are recruiting predominantly youth offenders. He noted the danger to the community is significant and unacceptable, and while there has been speculation about motives, police are keeping an open mind.

Detective Inspector Chris Murray said there were no obvious links between the targeted venues, though some shared ownership. He added that owners have not reported extortion, and suspected arsonists appear to be recruited through an underworld gig economy, often unaware of who they work for. Twelve people have been arrested so far.
