A tranquil hiking trail in regional Victoria has become the centre of a desperate search and rescue operation after experienced bushwalker Heather Maltman vanished without a trace. The 43-year-old was last seen on Sunday afternoon in the rugged terrain surrounding Porepunkah, near Bright, sparking a massive multi-agency response.
The alarm was raised when Ms. Maltman failed to return from her walk, prompting immediate concern from family and friends. Victoria Police, alongside local SES volunteers, have since launched an extensive air and land search, scouring the dense bushland and challenging topography for any sign of the missing woman.
Desperate Search in Difficult Terrain
Search crews are facing significant challenges due to the remote and heavily wooded area. The operation involves police air wing units conducting aerial sweeps while ground teams meticulously comb through the undergrowth. Despite their relentless efforts, no clues regarding Ms. Maltman's whereabouts have been discovered, intensifying the anguish for her loved ones.
Authorities have released a description of the missing woman in the hope that a member of the public may have seen her. Heather Maltman is described as Caucasian, approximately 165cm tall, with a slim build and brown hair. She was last seen wearing a black top and black leggings.
Appeal for Public Assistance
Victoria Police have issued a public appeal for information, urging anyone who was in the Porepunkah area on Sunday afternoon, particularly around the Beechworth-Wodonga Road, to come forward. Investigators are especially keen to speak to any motorists or hikers who may have dashcam or phone footage that could assist the search.
"We hold significant concerns for Heather’s welfare as it is out of character for her to disappear like this," a police spokesperson stated. "We are utilising all available resources to find her and are asking for the community's help. Any piece of information, no matter how small it may seem, could be vital."
The local community and fellow hikers are holding onto hope as the search enters a critical phase, praying for Heather's safe return.
