At least seven people have died and numerous others were injured after an explosion triggered a significant fire at the CFB Wainwright military base in Alberta, Canada, on Saturday afternoon. Hospitals in the region have been overwhelmed by the number of casualties.
Explosion and fire at CFB Wainwright
The incident occurred around 4pm local time on Saturday, 17 October, according to Canadian Defence Minister David McGuinty. “The explosion sparked a significant fire on Saturday, 17 October around 4pm local time. I'm saddened to share that there have been both fatalities and injuries as a result of an incident on the base,” he said.
The Canadian Armed Forces, along with federal, provincial and local authorities, were managing the emergency response, McGuinty added. The neighbouring town of Wainwright was providing hospital and firefighting assistance. Reports of a potential explosion at the base first emerged from sources who spoke to Global News, with at least seven fatalities confirmed.
Hospitals overwhelmed by casualties
A doctor at a hospital in Edmonton, a city 120 miles northwest of the blast, said patients were being brought to hospitals across the city from the base. Medical facilities and hospitals around the base have been completely overwhelmed due to the number of people injured.
Dr Warren Thirsk, an emergency department doctor at Royal Alexandra Hospital, stated: “It is more patients than any of us want to count right now. It’s a disaster. It’s a one in every 15 to 25-year disaster.”
Fire spreads amid high winds
Multiple reports have surfaced that the explosion triggered a large fire, which spread quickly due to strong winds in the region. The Municipal District of Wainwright verified that the fire had crossed the military base's boundary fence and was progressing rapidly in high winds. Firefighters from several areas were dispatched in response, and no evacuation order had been issued.
Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe has declared that his province is sending aid to Alberta, although he did not detail the specific resources being deployed. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith characterised the fire as “significant and tragic.”
National and political response
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney posted on X: “A serious incident creating a major fire has occurred at CFB Wainwright, in Alberta. Our thoughts are with all the brave women and men affected. We are working closely with the Government of Alberta and local authorities. Premier Smith and I are in close contact as are our relevant ministers and officials.”
Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, located roughly 180 kilometres (112 miles) south-east of Edmonton, is one of Canada's busiest military training bases, where soldiers are trained for combat operations. It is home to the Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre, which conducts realistic battlefield exercises, as well as the 3rd Canadian Division Training Centre, which provides military training.
Canadian Conservative opposition leader Pierre Poilievre disclosed that he had been in touch with Carney and the defence minister to offer support to those impacted by the fire. “Pray for Wainwright, everyone,” Poilievre urged in a social media post. He urged residents in the impacted area to follow emergency advice and keep roads clear for emergency services.
