A devastating incident unfolded in Atlanta on Tuesday when a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) employee opened fire, killing a police officer before turning the gun on himself.
The suspect, identified as 55-year-old Timothy Cunningham, was a respected CDC employee who had recently been promoted. Authorities are still investigating the motive behind the attack, which occurred at the CDC's Clifton Road campus.
Officer Down: A Hero Lost
The slain officer, whose name has not yet been released, was a veteran of the Atlanta Police Department. Colleagues described him as a dedicated public servant who always put others first.
"This is a heartbreaking loss for our department and the entire Atlanta community," said Police Chief Rodney Bryant in an emotional press conference.
Mystery Surrounds Shooter's Motive
What prompted Cunningham's violent actions remains unclear. Neighbors reported he had been acting strangely in recent weeks, while coworkers noted he had been absent from work for several days prior to the shooting.
