A British tourist has tragically lost his life after falling from a mountain viewpoint in the Spanish city of San Sebastian. The 38-year-old man, whose identity has not been disclosed, was pronounced dead at approximately 11 a.m. on Saturday following a plunge from the slopes of Mount Urgull, a 400-foot peak in the Basque city.
Discovery and Emergency Response
A passerby spotted the body and immediately dialed 112 to alert emergency services. Responders rushed to the scene but were unable to save him. His body has since been transferred to the Basque Institute of Legal Medicine for an autopsy.
Police Investigation
The Ertzaintza, the autonomous police force of the Basque Country, is leading the investigation. In their initial official statement, they confirmed that the incident is not being treated as suspicious at this stage. A spokesperson for the force said: 'Around 11am on Saturday, May 16, the Ertzaintza located the lifeless body of a 38-year-old man of European origin beneath the Baluarte Viewpoint on Mount Urgull in the city of San Sebastian. The Ertzaintza has opened an investigation to clarify the circumstances surrounding the discovery of the body. Pending the autopsy and forensic results, the Ertzaintza does not see any signs of criminal activity on the deceased's body.'
Background of the Victim
It remains unclear whether the deceased man was holidaying in the area or was a resident of Spain. The viewpoint from which he fell, known locally as Baluarte del Mirador, was originally constructed in the 16th century as part of San Sebastian's defensive fortifications. It offers panoramic views of the Basque city, located near the border with France and its stunning coastline. The walk from the San Telmo museum to the viewpoint takes approximately 15 minutes, with sunset considered an ideal time to visit.
Recent Similar Incidents
This tragedy follows a series of similar incidents involving foreign nationals in Spain. Last Monday, a 39-year-old Irishman died after falling from a cliff in the es Calo de s'Illa area on Ibiza's rugged north coast. The alarm was raised around 5:30 p.m. by a female friend. Local sources indicate the Irishman was a resident of Ibiza.
Earlier, on the preceding Friday, a 24-year-old British holidaymaker was admitted to a hospital intensive care unit after falling from the second floor of his hotel in the Ibizan party resort of San Antonio. Investigators believe the fall was accidental. The incident at the four-star Blau Park Hotel was described as the first such occurrence involving a British tourist in Ibiza this year.
