A man has been charged with the murder of three British family members and a French cyclist in the 2012 Alps shooting, French prosecutors said. The suspect, identified as a 48-year-old British national, was arrested on Wednesday in Chambéry, southeastern France, after a lengthy investigation.
The victims, Saad al-Hilli, 50, his wife Ikbal, 47, and her mother Suhaila al-Allaf, were found shot dead in their BMW on a forest road near Lake Annecy. French cyclist Sylvain Mollier was also killed at the scene. The Hillis' two young daughters survived, with one hiding in the car and the other severely beaten.
Prosecutor Line Bonnet confirmed the arrest but said further details were restricted by judicial secrecy laws. French media reported that the suspect had previously been questioned as a witness and was being investigated for his movements on the day of the killings.
The case has remained unsolved for over a decade despite extensive investigations by French and British police. Several other suspects have been arrested and released, including Saad al-Hilli's brother Zaid, who was cleared in 2013.
