Brit tourist found unresponsive in Zante pool; man re-arrested

A 69-year-old man has been re-arrested on suspicion of murdering a British tourist who was found unresponsive in a swimming pool at a holiday villa on the Greek island of Zante.

Jacqueline Causton, 66, from Bawtry near Doncaster, was staying in the Marathias area of Keri when she was discovered unresponsive in the pool of a rented villa on May 14. Someone at the property performed CPR before paramedics continued resuscitation attempts inside an ambulance.

She was rushed to Zakynthos General Hospital shortly after 4.30pm without a pulse, where her death was confirmed. Police and ambulance crews attended the villa, and the circumstances were passed on for investigation by Greek authorities. Her body was later repatriated to the UK.

Arrest and Re-Arrest

An inquest opening at Doncaster Coroner's Court revealed that a man was initially arrested on suspicion of murder on June 12. He was released on bail but has since been re-arrested following what police described as "fresh evidence". South Yorkshire Police later confirmed that the 69-year-old suspect was arrested in Worcestershire.

No charges have yet been announced, and the Crown Prosecution Service has yet to determine whether the investigation will be led by British or Greek authorities. No formal cause behind Jacqueline's death has been revealed.

Investigation and Next Steps

Early reports from Greece indicated investigators were looking into whether her death stemmed from drowning or a medical incident, with a post-mortem examination anticipated to help determine the cause. These potential explanations emerged prior to the British murder inquiry, and no definitive conclusion has been made public.

Area coroner Louise Slater adjourned the proceedings until February 2027, when the court anticipates receiving an update. The investigation continues.
