Bristol Mum Died from Blast Injuries After Saving Child

An inquest has heard that Jo Shaw, 35, who was killed in a deliberate house explosion in Bristol, suffered penetrating fragmentation blast injuries. The mother of one died in the blast on Sterncourt Road on May 3, along with her former partner, Ryan Kelly, 41.

Heroic Actions Before the Explosion

Neighbours reported that Kelly arrived at the address carrying what they described as a grenade. Jo Shaw instructed a child to play outside on a trampoline when an argument erupted prior to the explosion. Avon and Somerset Police received a call from inside the property reporting a domestic-related incident less than 20 minutes before the blast.

The force is treating the cause of the explosion as deliberate and recorded Ms Shaw's death as a homicide. Three other people, including a child, sustained minor injuries.

Inquest Proceedings

Assistant Avon coroner Debbie Rookes opened the inquest at Avon Coroner's Court in Flax Bourton. Coroner's officer Abigail Carey stated that Ms Shaw was pronounced dead at home by paramedics at 7am shortly after the incident. A post-mortem report from Dr Russell Delaney gave a proposed cause of death as penetrating fragmentation blast injury to the chest and pelvis.

The court heard that Ms Shaw, a single mother and personal assistant, was formally identified by her family. The coroner adjourned proceedings and requested further reports from a general practitioner, police, ambulance service, and pathologist. A further inquest hearing is provisionally listed for August 11, 2026.

Family Tribute

Ms Shaw's family paid tribute, saying: 'Joanne brought warmth, kindness, and strength into the lives of countless people. Her loving presence will be missed more than words can ever express, but her memory will forever remain in our hearts.'

They added: 'Her child has suffered the unimaginable loss of their mummy in this tragedy. Joanne's actions were nothing short of heroic. She will always be remembered not for the violence inflicted upon her, but for her bravery, her protective instinct, and the ultimate sacrifice she made for others.'

Ms Shaw grew up in the Stapleton area of Bristol and was known for her bubbly, friendly personality. She loved meeting new people and forming connections resulting in eternal friendships.

Police Investigation

Police said a call was received from a person inside the house at 6.17am reporting a domestic-related incident. The caller said a man they knew had forced entry to the house. At 6.30am, the caller told police the man was believed to be in possession of an explosive device. About two minutes later, an explosion occurred. Officers arrived at 6.34am, followed by fire and ambulance services. Residents were evacuated, and the Army conducted searches to ensure the area was safe. Searches also took place at Kelly's address in Speedwell.
