A young boy is fighting for his life after a horrific train incident at North Melbourne Railway Station. The Year 7 student from St Aloysius College was standing on the platform around 4pm on Monday when he was hit by a train and dragged several metres after his backpack straps reportedly became tangled between carriages.
The shocking incident unfolded in front of a crowd of commuters, including fellow students from the co-educational school. The boy was trapped under the train, prompting a dramatic rescue by Fire and Rescue Victoria, who used a hydraulic jack to lift the carriage and free him.
Eight paramedics treated the student at the scene before he was rushed to Royal Children's Hospital in a critical condition. He is receiving treatment for severe injuries to his lower legs.
The principal of St Aloysius College sent an email to students and parents offering support. 'At approximately 4pm today, we received reports that one of our Year 7 students was involved in an accident at North Melbourne Train Station,' she wrote. 'At this stage, we have very few specific details regarding the circumstances or the student's current condition. Events like this can be deeply unsettling for our young people. Please be mindful of your child's wellbeing this evening.'
First responders at the scene are also being supported by counselling services. Metro Trains confirmed the Craigieburn line was cancelled on Monday night, causing delays on the Werribee and Williamstown lines.
