A major police investigation is underway in the World Heritage-listed Blue Mountains after walkers made a grim discovery on a remote fire trail: a body inside a charred and burnt-out vehicle.
The shocking find was reported to emergency services just after 1:30 pm on Tuesday afternoon. The walkers stumbled upon the devastating scene on Queens Road, a secluded track near the popular town of Wentworth Falls, approximately 100 kilometres west of Sydney.
Upon arrival, officers from Blue Mountains Police Area Command were met with the shell of a destroyed car and the remains of an individual inside. The scene was immediately secured as a crime scene, with police establishing a perimeter to allow forensic specialists to begin their meticulous work.
A Challenging Investigation Begins
The intensity of the fire has presented significant challenges for investigators, making the formal identification of the deceased a top priority. A post-mortem examination will be crucial in determining the exact cause of death and uncovering the chain of events that led to this tragedy.
While the circumstances are still being unravelled, police have confirmed they are treating the death as suspicious. The remote location of the incident has sparked questions about how and why the vehicle came to be there.
