Police have launched an investigation after a body was discovered at the iconic Whitby Abbey, a location renowned for its gothic allure and ties to Bram Stoker's Dracula.
Officers were called to the historic site in North Yorkshire following reports of an unexplained death. The circumstances surrounding the discovery remain unclear, with authorities treating the incident as unexplained pending further inquiries.
Whitby Abbey, a ruined Benedictine monastery perched on a cliff overlooking the North Sea, attracts thousands of visitors each year. Its dramatic silhouette and literary connections make it one of Yorkshire's most recognisable landmarks.
A police spokesperson confirmed: "We were called to reports of a body found at Whitby Abbey. Enquiries are at an early stage to establish the circumstances."
The site has been temporarily closed to visitors while forensic examinations take place. English Heritage, which manages the property, stated they are assisting police with their investigation.
Local residents have expressed shock at the discovery in the normally tranquil location. One regular visitor told reporters: "It's such a peaceful place normally - this is completely unexpected and very sad."
Police have appealed for anyone with information about the incident to come forward. The identity of the deceased has not yet been released.
