A courageous 15-year-old schoolboy from Belfast has been credited with helping police apprehend a suspected child predator after making an anonymous report to Crimestoppers.
The tip-off led to the arrest of 55-year-old Brian McDermott, who now faces multiple serious charges related to child sexual offences. The PSNI has praised the teenager's decisive action, highlighting how community vigilance can directly assist law enforcement.
Detective Inspector Richard Vasey from the PSNI's Public Protection Branch stated: "This arrest demonstrates how vital information from the public, even when given anonymously, can significantly progress sensitive investigations and help protect vulnerable children."
The investigation began when the schoolboy, whose identity remains protected, reported concerning behaviour to the charity Crimestoppers. The organisation, which allows complete anonymity, immediately forwarded the information to police investigators.

McDermott, of north Belfast, has been charged with multiple offences including attempted sexual communication with a child and attempting to cause a child to engage in sexual activity. He remains in custody awaiting court proceedings.
Police are urging anyone with similar concerns to come forward, emphasizing that even anonymous information can be crucial in safeguarding children from potential harm.
