William Haxworth, 28, will spend at least the next 18 years behind bars after being convicted of the murder of his partner, Sophie Evans, in a case that has shocked the city of Bath.
Bristol Crown Court heard harrowing details of the sustained and brutal attack that led to the 31-year-old victim's death in the flat the couple shared on Morford Street. The violent assault occurred on the evening of February 16th of this year.
A Tragic End
Emergency services rushed to the scene following a distressed 999 call, but despite their efforts, Ms. Evans was pronounced dead. A post-mortem examination concluded that she died from multiple injuries.
Haxworth was arrested at the scene and later charged with murder. He initially attempted to deny the charge but ultimately changed his plea to guilty.
Justice Served
On Friday, Mr. Justice Garnham handed down a life sentence, determining that Haxworth must serve a minimum term of 18 years before he can be considered for parole.
In a moving statement, the family of Sophie Evans described her as a 'much-loved daughter, sister, and friend' whose life was tragically cut short. They spoke of the unimaginable void her death has left in their lives.
A Response from Law Enforcement
Detective Chief Inspector Simon Dewfall of Avon and Somerset Police, the senior investigating officer, welcomed the sentence. He stated: 'This was a horrific domestic murder which resulted in the needless loss of a young woman's life. Haxworth's actions were utterly reprehensible. While no sentence can bring Sophie back, we hope this outcome brings some sense of justice for her grieving family.'
The case stands as a grim reminder of the devastating consequences of domestic violence.
