A 27-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following an incident in which a Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) officer was struck by a stolen police vehicle in Downpatrick. The event unfolded in the early hours of Sunday morning, prompting a major investigation by detectives from the Serious Crime branch.
Details of the Incident
The incident occurred at approximately 4:45am on Sunday within the Model Farm estate in Downpatrick. According to the PSNI, the officer sustained injuries that are serious but not believed to be life-threatening. Initial police attempts to stop a vehicle in the Fountain Street area led to the vehicle being later discovered in Ballymote Walk. Officers observed a man fleeing from the vehicle and pursued him on foot towards Colmcille Road.
When officers returned to their vehicle, an individual had entered the driver's seat and began driving erratically. The stolen police car was then allegedly driven directly at an officer, who discharged a shot before being struck. The vehicle was subsequently abandoned, and the suspect escaped the scene.
Arrest and Investigation
The 27-year-old suspect was later apprehended on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in custody. Urgent medical treatment was administered at the scene by fellow officers, supported by members of the local community. The injured officer was transported to hospital by the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service for treatment of injuries described as serious but not life-threatening at this time.
The police vehicle, the officer's weapon, and ammunition have all been recovered and sent for forensic examination. Assistant Chief Constable Melanie Jones stated: "As is standard procedure when a police firearm is drawn, the Police Ombudsman for Northern Ireland has been informed, and their enquiries are ongoing."
Police Response
ACC Jones emphasised the dangers faced by officers: "Officers put themselves on the front line to help keep people safe—they do not deserve to be assaulted for simply doing their job, and today’s incident is a stark reminder of the dangers they face. Our thoughts are with the officer as he receives ongoing medical treatment today for his injuries in hospital. We will continue to support him and his family."
She added: "This would have been a terrifying experience for the officer and also his colleagues—with the clear potential to cause life-changing or even fatal injuries. Actions were taken this morning in defence of life to protect himself and fellow officers."
