Secret Service Shoots Armed North Carolina Artist at Trump's Mar-a-Lago Estate
Artist Shot Dead in Armed Mar-a-Lago Break-In Attempt

Secret Service agents and a Palm Beach County sheriff's deputy fatally shot a 21-year-old North Carolina man early Sunday morning as he allegedly attempted to breach the perimeter of former President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. on February 22, while Trump and the first lady were in Washington, D.C.

Details of the Fatal Confrontation

According to Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw, Austin Tucker Martin was allegedly armed with a shotgun and a gas canister when he encountered law enforcement just inside Mar-a-Lago's north gate. The officers ordered Martin to put down his gear, at which point he lowered the canister but then raised the shotgun to a shooting position.

"At that point in time, the deputy and the two Secret Service agents fired their weapons," Sheriff Bradshaw told reporters during a Sunday press conference. The shooting resulted in Martin's death at the scene.

Family's Shock and Background of the Suspect

Family members had reported Martin missing over the weekend and expressed profound shock upon learning of the incident. His cousin, Braeden Fields, described Martin as a "good kid" who "wouldn't even hurt an ant" in interviews with the Associated Press.

"I wouldn't believe he would do something like this. It's mind-blowing," Fields said, adding that Martin "doesn't even know how to use a gun." Fields noted that while Martin's family were "avid Trump supporters," the 21-year-old was "real quiet, never really talked about anything."

Martin's Artistic Endeavors and Personal History

Martin, who graduated from Union Pines High School in Cameron, North Carolina in 2023, had recently started a business called Fresh Sky Illustrations. The company specialized in creating handmade drawings of golf courses, with a mission statement describing its focus as "bringing to life the hopeful feeling of being on a golf course."

Brandon Huneycutt, head golf professional at Quail Ridge Golf Course in Sanford, North Carolina, recalled briefly meeting Martin several years ago and allowing him to use a golf cart to photograph parts of the course.

"I guess he took pictures of them, and he went home and actually hand-drew the pictures," Huneycutt told The News & Observer. "They're pretty good pieces."

Investigation and Evidence Recovery

Investigators discovered a silver Volkswagen believed to belong to Martin parked near Mar-a-Lago. Inside the vehicle, police found a box that appeared to have contained the shotgun used in the incident.

According to Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi, investigators believe Martin acquired the weapon as he traveled south toward Florida. The FBI has taken the lead in the ongoing investigation into the incident.

Political Affiliation and Voting Records

Despite his family's support for Trump, voting records obtained by The News & Observer listed Martin as unaffiliated with any political party. This detail adds complexity to understanding his motivations for the alleged break-in attempt.

History of Security Threats at Trump Properties

This incident represents the latest in a series of security threats targeting Trump and his properties since the 2024 campaign season. In July 2024, a gunman grazed Trump with a bullet during a Pennsylvania rally before being killed by security.

Later that same year, Ryan Wesley Routh, 59, attempted to assassinate Trump near Mar-a-Lago by pointing a rifle through a fence bordering the Trump International Golf Club. Routh was recently sentenced to life in federal prison and has filed an appeal challenging his conviction and sentence.

The Secret Service continues to maintain heightened security around Trump and his properties, with this latest incident underscoring the persistent threats faced by the former president and his associates. The investigation into Martin's motivations and how he gained access to weapons despite his family's claims about his unfamiliarity with firearms remains ongoing.
