Man Arrested in Connection with Murder of Kerry Farmer Michael Gaine
A man in his 50s has been arrested by Gardaí for questioning in relation to the ongoing investigation into the murder of Kerry sheep farmer Michael Gaine. The suspect is currently being detained at a Garda station in Kerry under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.
Background of the Case
Michael Gaine, a 56-year-old sheep farmer with land near Kenmare in County Kerry, was last seen alive on the morning of March 20 last year. He was reported missing by his family the following day after he failed to return home from checking on his farm animals. Initially treated as a missing person case, the investigation was upgraded to a homicide investigation a month later, prompting an appeal for information from his wife Janice and sister Noreen O’Regan.
Discovery of Remains and Previous Arrest
After weeks of extensive searches involving Irish soldiers, the Coast Guard, the Garda water unit, and road checkpoints, partial remains of Mr Gaine were discovered on his farm on May 16. Shortly after, on May 18, a man in his 50s was arrested on suspicion of the murder but was released without charge after a day of questioning.
Current Investigation Status
The latest arrest, announced on Tuesday, marks a significant development in the case. The investigation is being led by the Kerry Division of the Serious Crime Unit, with support from the Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation. An Garda Síochána has confirmed that they continue to liaise with and support Mr Gaine’s family through dedicated family liaison officers, ensuring they are kept informed as the probe progresses.
