A dramatic police chase in Arkansas ended violently when a suspect deliberately slammed his vehicle into a patrol car, according to authorities in Washington County.
The incident unfolded in Fayetteville, where officers attempted to stop a speeding Mazda. Instead of pulling over, the driver accelerated, leading police on a dangerous pursuit through city streets.
Reckless Driving Turns Dangerous
Eyewitnesses reported seeing the suspect's vehicle weaving through traffic at high speeds, narrowly avoiding collisions with multiple cars. "It was terrifying to watch," one local resident told reporters. "He was driving like he had no regard for anyone's safety."
Deliberate Collision Shocks Officers
The chase reached its climax when the suspect suddenly swerved and rammed his Mazda directly into a Washington County Sheriff's Office patrol vehicle. Bodycam footage released by police shows the shocking moment of impact, with debris flying across the road.
"This was clearly an intentional act," said Sheriff Tim Helder in a press briefing. "Our deputy is lucky to be alive after that level of impact."
Aftermath and Investigation
Following the crash, officers quickly apprehended the suspect, who sustained minor injuries. The deputy involved was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to recover fully.
Authorities are now investigating what prompted the suspect's reckless behaviour and whether he was under the influence of substances at the time of the incident. Charges are expected to include felony evasion and assault on a law enforcement officer.
Local residents have expressed relief that no innocent bystanders were harmed during the dangerous incident. "This could have ended so much worse," commented a shop owner near the crash site. "We're just thankful the police contained the situation before anyone else got hurt."
