Ann Widdecombe was killed in a 'targeted attack', with counter terrorism police granted a warrant to hold the suspect for up to seven days under the Terrorism Act. Head of Counter Terrorism Policing Laurence Taylor confirmed the murder investigation has not been declared a terrorist incident at this time.
Police Statement on the Attack
Taylor said: 'This is a murder investigation following a brutal attack on a 78-year-old woman in her own home.' He added: 'We are working to understand the planning and preparation and the motivation that sits behind the attack.'
Detectives have obtained a warrant of further detention, allowing them to hold the suspect for up to seven days under the Terrorism Act. Taylor noted there is a 'limit' to the details he can provide given it is a live murder investigation, but 'it is clear this was a targeted attack'.
Impact and Ongoing Investigation
Taylor would not comment on whether any other politicians were potential targets or if foreign states were involved. He described the 'deeply distressing impact on Miss Widdecombe's family'. The investigation continues as police work to uncover the planning and motivation behind the attack.
