A Birmingham man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison after being convicted of raping a woman he lured through Airbnb. The disturbing case unfolded in the West Midlands city, exposing potential risks in short-term rental arrangements.
Predatory Scheme Uncovered
Mohammed Ali, 34, used the popular accommodation platform to target his victim, inviting her to his property under false pretenses. Birmingham Crown Court heard how Ali manipulated the situation to isolate the woman before sexually assaulting her.
Police Praise Victim's Courage
Detective Inspector James Birtles from West Midlands Police commended the survivor for her bravery throughout the investigation and trial. "This was a horrific ordeal, and her strength has been instrumental in securing this conviction," Birtles stated.
Warning for Short-Term Renters
The case has raised concerns about safety measures on peer-to-peer rental platforms. Authorities advise:
- Always research hosts thoroughly before booking
- Share accommodation details with trusted contacts
- Meet in public spaces first when possible
- Trust instincts if situations feel unsafe
Airbnb has confirmed Ali has been permanently banned from their platform following the conviction.
Sentencing Remarks
Judge Simon Drew KC described the attack as "a profound violation of trust" and emphasized the lasting trauma inflicted on the victim. The 12-year sentence includes time for related offenses of false imprisonment and administering a noxious substance.
Ali will remain on the sex offenders register indefinitely and is subject to a restraining order protecting the survivor.
